A Brief History of Crosby Township During the late 18th century white settlers to the Crosby Township area were met with high resistance from Native American tribes. In 1787 the Northwest Ordinance was passed, giving the go ahead for the settlement of the area. The Native American tribes were eventually defeated on August 20, 1794 and an agreement for settlement was reached with the prominent leaders of the Native American Tribes. The sale of this land was facilitated by a new land office opened in Cincinnati on April 6, 1801. In 1803 the area was named Whitewater Township. The area was divided later in 1803 and the land that would become Crosby Township was formed with over half of the original land that composed Whitewater Township. The Crosby Township area was later divided in order to form what is now Morgan and Harrison Townships. One interesting fact is the origin of the name New Haven. The town was named for the home of an early settler, Joab Comstock from New Haven Connecticut. However, Comstock had originally named the town Crosby, the maiden name of his mother.Crosby Township Hall The Crosby Township Hall is located at 10759 Oxford Road. The Crosby Township Hall was built in 1865 on a lot given by Andrew McCoy Wakefield for that sole purpose. The history of the building is very interesting. The voters of Crosby Township had founded an organization during the Civil War to help those who were drafted into the military. The members of the organization deposited a certain amount of money with the treasurer of the township. This money was used when a person was drafted to pay a willing substitute to go into the military as a substitute. After the war a sum of $1,200 remained in the fund and it was decided that this money was to be used to build the town hall.
Whitewater Shaker Village On Oxford road the remains of the Whitewater Shaker Village are a very big part of Crosby Township history. These buildings were the very buildings that housed the Shakers. The Shakers were a religious sect that lived in the village from 1824 to 1916. The Passmore Log Cabin As one of the earliest Township symbols, this log structure is believed to be the first cabin built in the village of New Haven. The cabin stood on Lot 29 on the northeast corner of Willey Road and Passmore Street. The original cabin was 16 x 18 ˝ feet. Room additions had been added to the north and east sides. The cabin was donated to the Crosby Township Historical Society in 1996 by owner, Kelly Rolfes. The CTHS dismantled and moved the cabin to the rear of the New Haven Fire Station. The reassembled cabin was completed in 2002. Crosby Township Veterans’ and Citizens’ Memorial In October, 1999, the Crosby Township Trustees appointed a committee for the purpose of creating and constructing a Veterans’ Memorial to be located on the grounds of the Senior/Community Center. The committee chose the formation of a star in which each point would possess a monument to honor the various branches of the military services. The bricks surrounding the monuments can still be purchased today through the Senior/Community Center. |
